Counselling for individuals in Edinburgh and online

Welcome, I am a person-centred counsellor who uses an integrated approach and draws on different psychological theories. Together, we can focus on how you want to feel and discover the resources from within so that you can find the answers. I help you identify what you want to focus on and then support you to define small steps to move towards that goal, we can work to find any blocks that are holding you back. I am a warm, down-to-earth counsellor with a very compassionate approach, with experience supporting and caring for individuals through challenging times. I work with adults, young people and children.

Hand, Heart and Head Counselling

The harmonious blend of hand, heart and head is a philosophy for life. Hand refers to the willingness and being given the space to take action to achieve one’s goals and to contribute to the world. Heart refers to the capacity for feeling emotionally connected to oneself and the world at large. Head refers to the ability to think clearly and independently.

Why Counselling

People seek counselling for many reasons and taking the first step is often the hardest. Perhaps you’re experiencing a life-changing event and you’re struggling with shock or grief, maybe you are suffering feelings of low mood and isolation, low self-esteem or anxiety and stress. You might not know how to regain a sense of self or direction or even understand why you feel counselling will help; don’t worry we can explore this together.

Feeling Overwhelmed

Often, events from the past can prevent us from living the life we want, and we feel stuck or trapped, unable to move forward. At times we all experience issues where we are unable to cope and maybe feel overwhelmed, anxious and alone. Sometimes the way out seems impossible and speaking to family and friends might feel too difficult.

How I Can Help

With counselling, I can help you feel heard so that you connect at a deeper core level to gain insight and clarity about yourself and the choices you can make. I offer short and long-term therapy and work with adults, young people and children. Everybody is unique and I tailor my counselling to suit individual needs, so you can make better sense of your life - past, present and future.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose counselling?

Counselling can help you live a more fulfilled and resourceful life by providing a space for reflection and development. This space can help you to address and resolve specific problems, make decisions, cope with crises, and improve relationships. Finding the right counsellor is key to a successful outcome. I feel very passionate about my work as a counsellor and receive much positive feedback.

What is your approach to counselling?

Counselling is a process of personal growth, a way of moving on with life, finding healing, exploring meaning, and experimenting with new ways of being in the world. My training is person-centred, although I also offer integrative therapy, which combines various therapeutic tools and approaches to fit the needs of the individual, drawing on different theories to respond to the differing needs of my clients.

How important is our relationship?

The effectiveness of counselling is based on the quality of our relationship, it is at the core of how I practise. Honesty, trust, respect, understanding and empathy underpin my work. For me, a crucially important task in counselling is to offer a safe space where a person feels nurtured, well supported, able to take risks, where growth and development are possible and an individual feels secure enough to get in touch with more vulnerable parts of themselves.

What is child/young person counselling?

Counselling offers a child or young person the opportunity to talk about how they feel without the fear of judgement. Speaking to a counsellor, away from their home and school life, can take away some of the pressure. As the child or young person may not yet have the vocabulary to explain or understand themselves, I offer a safe environment to express feelings and understand what may have caused them to feel this way. In this modern world, there are so many new or different pressures and experiences, which can be challenging for some.

The methods used in sessions depend on the child’s age, situation and development. I will look at ways the child develops, interacts, and learns. Some young children learn about the world and develop through movement through play, and through doing. On a neurological level, like any person in a good emotional state, the child will be processing at higher levels. On the other hand, when a child feels unsafe, threatened, frightened, stressed, etc, the neural processing is reduced to smaller areas of the brain that function for survival. Thus, the child in fight/flight/freeze/fawn will not be able to process and learn in meaningful ways. Instead, in these states, the child's body is being prepared for survival actions. This is why it is so important that we do things that support and encourage the child's emotional well-being.

Are your sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is fundamental to building our relationship and to our work together, a high degree of confidentiality between client and counsellor will always be maintained. There are a few exceptions to the rule where information within our sessions might be shared; If I believe that harm may happen to you or someone else, criminal activity, or if you tell me something that I am unable to keep confidential. I will always endeavour to discuss any disclosure to others with you beforehand and jointly agree on a way forward.

In certain cases, you may request that I share information concerning you. In these cases, I will require written permission from you before your request can be carried out.

How inclusive is your approach to counselling?

For many years I have welcomed, respected and appreciated working with people from a wide variety of genders, ages, disabilities, ethnic, cultural, religious backgrounds and sexual orientations. All kinds of minds are welcome, if hesitant, please feel free to get in touch for reassurance that we would be a good fit

How do I pay for my sessions?

Please pay in full 24 hours before your session begins. Fees are per session and are usually paid via bank transfer or by cash if undergoing in-person counselling.
